The conversion law amends Law No. 91 of 5 February 1992. This procedure can be followed only <strong>by\u00a0adults\u00a0applicants<\/strong>, for the registration of minor children please visit our Registry Office page:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ambabudhabi.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/nascita\/\">Nascita<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Under the new version of Law No. 91\/1992, modified by Law n. 74, 23\/05\/2025, a person born abroad to an Italian parent does\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0automatically acquire Italian citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Italian citizenship is granted only if at least one of the following conditions is met:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>a) Continuous residence in Italy of the Italian parent<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Italian parent must have lived continuously in Italy for at least two years\u00a0after\u00a0acquiring Italian citizenship and\u00a0<strong>before<\/strong>the date of birth of the child.<br \/>\nResidences in Italy prior to the acquisition of Italian citizenship, as well as any residence in Italy of the non-Italian parent, are irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Documents to submit at the appointment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>b) Sole ownership of Italian citizenship by the ancestor<\/strong>.<br \/>\nA parent or grandparent must own\u00a0only\u00a0Italian citizenship, or must have held only Italian citizenship at the time of their death. Self-declarations stating the negative ownership of other citizenships are\u00a0not accepted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Documents to submit at the appointment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PROCEDURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applications for citizenship by descent should be submitted at the consular office of the applicant\u2019s country of permanent residence. On the day of the appointment, the applicant must submit all the documents in original, duly legalized\/apostilled and translated into Italian.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This office reserves the right to request additional evidence and supporting documentation at the appointment when assessing the case. The original documents requested have no expiration date (regardless of the validity indicated by the foreign authority that issued the document) and will not be returned.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>HOW TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To submit an application for recognition of Italian citizenship at the Consular Chancellery of the Embassy of Italy in Abu Dhabi, applicants must:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Gather all the required documentation.<\/li>\n<li>Book an appointment by sending an email to <a href=\"mailto:cons.abudhabi@esteri.it\">cons.abudhabi@esteri.it<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Please note that appointments are individual. Therefore, each applicant must book a separate appointment.<\/p>\n<p>Only applications from individuals residing within the consular jurisdiction of Abu Dhabi will be considered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>CONSULAR FEE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applications for citizenship by descent are subject to a fee of 600 EURO\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/ambabudhabi.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/albo-consolare-e-altri-servizi\/tariffe-consolari\/\">Tariffe consolari \u2013 Ambasciata d&#8217;Italia Abu Dhabi<\/a>).
