Scientific cooperation

The Embassy considers the enhancement of scientific cooperation between Italy and the UAE of significant importance.

The signing, in January 2016, of the "Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the exploration and peaceful use of space “,
between the Italian Space Agency and the Space Agency of the UAE, should definitely be considered in this perspective. The goal of the MoU is to create synergies and foster the participation of the Italian aerospace sector in the ambitious space programs of the UAE, primarily the MARS project in 2021, aiming at sending a probe to the Red Planet on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the UAE Federation.

Equally interesting are, in the field of industrial research cooperation, the study trips periodically organized by Fincantieri for young UAE undergraduates from the Faculty of Engineering of Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, who are interested in engineering and ship design.

Since the end of 2015, the Embassy has also launched the series of seminars "Extra-Ordinary Italy", aimed at presenting lesser known Italian scientific excellences to the general UAE public, such as: the "father of Italian robotics", Giorgio Metta, the luminary of the use of nuclear physics in arts, Prof. Pier Andrea Mandò, or the astronaut Maurizio Cheli, who was in orbit on the shuttle Columbia in 1996.

Finally, the Embassy, in order to promote knowledge transfer, supports academic collaborations among higher education institutions and encourages the exchange of visits of professors and researchers (taking also advantage of the more than 60 Italian professors in UAE Universities), and encourages visiting students and twinning university students to consolidate cooperation in scientific, cultural, sporting and social areas. A further objective of the Embassy is to increase the number of Italian students at the Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi, which offers interesting scholarships for post-graduate programs (Master's Degree and PhD).
