The Italian honours system, inspired by the great values on which the Constitution is based, includes the following Orders which can be granted to foreign citizens and Italians living abroad:

The Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (OMRI) rewards the merits acquired in favour of the Nation in the fields of science, literature, the arts, economic, social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities, as well as for long and signalled services in the civilian and military careers.

The Order of the Star of Italy (OSI) is assigned as a recognition to all those who, Italian or foreigners, have acquired special merits in the promotion of friendly relations and cooperation between Italy and other countries, and in promoting ties with Italy.

The Order of Merit of Labour (OML) confers the title of "Cavaliere del Lavoro" (knight of labour) to the Italian citizens, also working abroad, who have been particularly meritorious, and distinguished themselves in the fields of agriculture, industry, trade, craft, banking and insurance.
